It is important to determine the funding sources and supporters before determining your Yes or No vote on CA Ballot Measures. For example Prop 45 was brought forward by the CA Chamber of Commerce with “speeding up” of “ special projects” EHRs (Environmental Health Reviews). It has been revealed that over $4 million of contributions supporting Prop 45 have come from data center construction companies which includes Prologis, proposing multiple data centers projects in San Jose. Add to this Prop 45 supporting contributions from energy companies PG&E, Sempra, Edison International, California Resources International and others for a combined total close to $10 million.

Already communities are impacted by data centers’ use of electricity and water resources with exposure to toxic chemicals. They use community resources and we pay. Development of data centers has become a flashpoint for Prop 45. But other concerns exist because Prop 45 special projects are not well defined and can include industrial warehouses, CO2 and methane gas pipelines and landfill gas facilities. Prop 45 will set time limits for communities to address environmental concerns prior to implementation and limit litigation recourse if environmental and health harms are determined following a project development. Prop 45 does not address urban housing but will result in sprawl in the back country and high fire risk areas.

We will shoulder the economic and health costs with this bypassing of environmental regulation. This is why I oppose Prop 45 and encourage you to do the same - check NO on Ballot Measure 45. For more information go to https://www.noprop45ca.com/coalition. You will see over 500 labor, public health, environmental and justice groups opposing Prop 45, including California Nurses for Environmental Health and Justice. Please share widely with friends, families and nurse colleagues and encourage all to vote.

Day two took us out of the conference room and int Day two took us out of the conference room and into the garden. 🌻🥕

On Saturday, October 17, the CNEHJ event carpooled to the Edible Schoolyard Community Farm in Stockton, CA, and it was the perfect way to close out our conference weekend.

The garden was alive with a community event that brought together families, neighbors, and local firefighters. There was so much happening: free vegetables to take home, raffles with prizes from local vendors, pumpkin painting, face painting, and even a beekeeping demonstration. 🎃🐝🎨

What stood out most was being outside, in nature, together. Seeing kids and families getting their hands dirty and learning where food comes from was a powerful reminder of why this work matters. Sustainable food systems start with community, and learning to grow your own food is one of the most empowering ways to take part in your own health and well-being. 🌱

More events are coming, so stay tuned and keep an eye on our page for what’s next!

This past weekend, October 16-17, we gathered at S This past weekend, October 16-17, we gathered at Stanislaus State’s Stockton Campus for the Food Systems, Community Health, and Well-Being Conference. These highlights from day one of the event brought together health professionals around agriculture and environmental health.

A heartfelt thank you to every speaker who generously shared their expertise, and to every attendee who showed up with curiosity, passion, and purpose. It was truly special to meet all of you and to be in a room full of people who care deeply about the same things: healthy communities, healthy food systems, and a healthier environment for all.

Friday night’s dinner was a highlight too. Sharing a meal gave us the chance to bond, swap stories, and build connections that will carry this work forward. 🍽️✨

Thank you for being part of this. We’re so grateful! 🙏

This is just the beginning. More events are coming, so keep an eye on our page for future announcements!

“ I recently went to the Monterrey Aquarium with m “ I recently went to the Monterrey Aquarium with my 2- and 4-year-old grandchildren. It is a magical place no matter how old you are. The spectacle that Mother Nature provides is mesmerizing.

In addition to the spectacle, the Aquarium has a serious mission to educate us. For those of us who love seafood, they have created an easy set if guides to help us make consumer choices that will help sustain fish populations.

Their Seafood Guides cover the most popular seafood but also provide information about regional seafood. They even have a Sushi Guide!

Their Super Green List has 10 seafoods you can eat in good conscience, knowing they’re good for you and the planet. These foods are high in omega-3 fatty acids and low in mercury.

As nurses we are always looking for evidence for making our own healthier consumer choices and sharing that information with our patients and communities.
The Aquarium gives us a great set of tools to make that easy.

Oh yeah, and they have mouth-watering recipes!! Enjoy and feel good about your choices.” ~ Barbara Sattler, RN, DrPH, FAAN
