In CA, small steps are being taken by our legislature to keep federal dollars ($75M) from being used to create a coal storage facility in Oakland. Coal is the dirtiest fossil fuel. “California Nurses for Environmental Health and Justice is urging the EPA to include microplastics and nanoplastics in the final Sixth Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR 6). Growing evidence indicates that these particles, and plastic associated chemicals detected in water, including PFAS, phthalates, bisphenols, and flame retardants-may pose significant risks to human health. National monitoring is an essential first step toward understanding exposure, protecting drinking water, and preventing harm.“ - Teri Olson, RN

SB 1259 has already passed the Senate and its Assembly policy committees. It now heads to the floor for a full vote in the Assembly.

For generations, communities in Carson, Wilmington, and Benicia have lived in the shadow of refinery operations - breathing in toxic air, watching neighbors get sick, dealing with flares and explosions.

Now, as refineries close or idle, those same communities are being asked to plan for what’s next without knowing the most basic facts:
How contaminated is the site?
How much will cleanup cost?
Who’s paying for it?

Every other heavily polluting industry in California - coal, nuclear, solar - has to disclose this before they shut down. Refineries don’t. #sb1259 , the Refinery Transparency Act, closes that gap.

💧 Offer water often, even before they’re thirsty. Avoid juice or sugary drinks.
👕 Dress them in loose, light-colored clothing.
