“ I recently went to the Monterrey Aquarium with my 2- and 4-year-old grandchildren. It is a magical place no matter how old you are. The spectacle that Mother Nature provides is mesmerizing.

In addition to the spectacle, the Aquarium has a serious mission to educate us. For those of us who love seafood, they have created an easy set if guides to help us make consumer choices that will help sustain fish populations.

Their Seafood Guides cover the most popular seafood but also provide information about regional seafood. They even have a Sushi Guide!

Their Super Green List has 10 seafoods you can eat in good conscience, knowing they’re good for you and the planet. These foods are high in omega-3 fatty acids and low in mercury.

As nurses we are always looking for evidence for making our own healthier consumer choices and sharing that information with our patients and communities.
The Aquarium gives us a great set of tools to make that easy.

Oh yeah, and they have mouth-watering recipes!! Enjoy and feel good about your choices.” ~ Barbara Sattler, RN, DrPH, FAAN

Prop 45 was introduced by the California Chamber of Commerce, which represents oil companies, developers, investor‑owned utilities, and other major industrial interests.

It will directly weaken protections for clean air, clean water, public health, and wildlife.

“California moves to outlaw disposable vapes, a toxic trash plague from beaches to battery fires”

@cagovernor should sign #AB762 to rid this wasteful, toxic product from our communities.

Each day, Americans throw away almost 500,000 disposable vapes — 5.7 every second. They often end up in the trash or on the ground, littering streets and beaches and leaching toxic chemicals into waterways. If they reach waste facilities, they also pose a fire hazard.

Vape manufacturing uses extremely valuable materials such as copper wire and lithium that not only require environmentally destructive mining operations to extract, but could instead be used for longer lasting and more socially beneficial devices, such as electric car batteries.

AB 762 passed the legislature and is awaiting signature of the Governor.

Nurses voices belong in the voter guide!

CNEHJ is proud to stand in opposition to prop 45, which would dismantle important CEQA protections for California’s environment and communities.

Our nursing voice matters - and this November, it will be part of the conversation.

As nurses, we know that environmental policy is health policy. We’re speaking up to protect clean air, healthy communities, and the environmental safeguards Californians depend on.

Read the voter guide. Know the issues. Make your voice heard.

“Plastic is good??? That’s what kids will be learning in school.

WHAT!!!! Nurses have been reading and attending webinars to learn about scientific evidence regarding the health risks that plastics are having on human and environmental health and guess what the plastic industry has been doing? Successfully influencing California schools to teach our children how wonderful plastic is, including plastic bags!!

Listening to the California Report on my public radio station (KQED), I just found out about a new report, Expelled: Exposing Industry Propoganda in US Schools, by the Plastic Pollution Coalition, that reveals how the plastic industry is influencing schools across the US, including in California, to integrate curriculum that teaches students how important plastic is, including plastic bags. Under pressure from the American Chemistry Council, a lobbying group for the plastics industry persuaded school officials in California to bring a new environmental curriculum into K-12 schools that includes positive messages about plastic shopping bags, interviews and documents show. This includes lesson plans and worksheets, hands-on science experiments, and a program called “PlastiVan” that travels from city to city teaching students about “the contribution plastics make to modern life.

The rewritten textbooks and teachers’ guides coincided with a public relations and lobbying effort by the chemistry council to fight proposed plastic bag bans throughout the country. But despite the positive message, activists say there is no debate: Plastic bags kill marine animals, leech toxic chemicals and take an estimated 1,000 years to decompose in landfills.

The public health community will NEVER be able to compete with corporate America’s financial capability and current doubt about messaging from government agencies is making it even more difficult to bring real science to the public, but we must continue to try. For more information created by nurses about plastics, see California Nurses for Environmental Health and Justice’s plastics webpage and find a 1-hour CE, on-line primer course on plastics today! “ ~Barbara Sattler, RN, DrPH, FAAN

“The climate is changing and so must we. Another “hottest summer” on earth and we still can’t seem to get the message to our president and federal legislators about the urgency of climate change. In CA, small steps are being taken by our legislature to keep federal dollars ($75M) from being used to create a coal storage facility in Oakland. Coal is the dirtiest fossil fuel. The environmental health and justice issues are clear. Coal or any other form of fossil fuels are not what we need now or ever more.” -Barbara Sattler, RN, DrPH, FAAN

“California Nurses for Environmental Health and Justice is urging the EPA to include microplastics and nanoplastics in the final Sixth Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR 6). Growing evidence indicates that these particles, and plastic associated chemicals detected in water, including PFAS, phthalates, bisphenols, and flame retardants-may pose significant risks to human health. National monitoring is an essential first step toward understanding exposure, protecting drinking water, and preventing harm.“ - Teri Olson, RN
